North Gwinnett HS grad wins Burn Notice Science Challenge

SUWANEE, Ga. -- A former North Gwinnett High School student has won a national science competition sponsored by the hit USA Network show "Burn Notice."

Craig Owenby received a $10,000 scholarship for his creation -- a laser communication device that can audibly transmit messages around a wall and from more than 100 feet away.

As part of his grand prize in the Burn Notice Science Challenge, Owenby got to visit the "Burn Notice" set and meet members of the cast and crew. He was also recognized in a TV spot featuring actor Bruce Campbell.

The Burn Notice Science Challenge asked young STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students to create spy challenges that the characters on the show may find useful.

"I was blown away by all the creative, clever entries we received -- these are some seriously brilliant kids," Matt Nix, creator and executive producer of "Burn Notice," said in a statement. "STEM has always been a passion of mine, and I'm thrilled we were able to give these students a chance to demonstrate their talents in this area."
