11 Alive hosts Hero Central, where YOU can help with "Curing Kid's Cancer".  All day this Friday.

Atlanta, GA--  11Alive has a chance for you to be a hero and help fight cancer in children.

We are hosting a Hero Central this Friday where you become the Hero. The money you give will go to ‘Curing Kid’s Cancer’ a local group raising money for research. It was started by parents who lost their child to cancer. 

We hope you’ll join us and help Friday from 11am to 8pm here at 11Alive.

Come to Gwinnett County's 23rd Annual Lighting of the Tree

Atlanta, GA--  The Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation and the Lawrenceville Tourism & Trade Association host the 23rd Annual Lighting of the Tree on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse in downtown Lawrenceville.   Enjoy a variety of holiday entertainment beginning at 5 p.m., including live musical entertainment from The Class Act Band, face painting, dance performances, and of course the arrival of Santa Claus in a vintage fire truck on loan from the Winder Fire Department.

The annual lighting of the tree ceremony, begins at 6 p.m., and the much awaited arrival of Santa is at approximately 6:45 p.m.

The holiday fun continues throughout December at Holiday on the Square at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse as the Santa Trolley once again rolls into the square on December 3, 4 and 5 from 5:00-8:00 pm, where children can ride along with the jolly ole elf.

Kaylin Reque of Suwanee Wins Miss Georgia USA , Kristen Robinson of Stone Mountain Wins Miss GA Teen

Atlanta, GA--  Kaylin Reque, 22, of Suwanee, won Miss Georgia USA this past weekend at the Woodland Performing Arts Center in Cartersville.  Kaylin, a graduate of North Gwinnett High School  proudly represented her home town in the pageant as Miss Suwanee, USA.

The other notable winner was Miss Teen Georgia, which went to the Stone Mountain resident Kristen Robinson.  11Alive News' own, Paul Ossmann was the MC of the large event and was delighted that Ms. Reque won.

2 teen science superstars from Gwinnett County named Regional Winners of Siemens Competition

Atlanta, GA--  Sten Chen and Tim Wu, teen science superstars from Gwinnett County were just named Regional Winners of the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology at Georgia Tech. They received a $6,000 scholarship and will move on to the Competition’s National Finals in Washington, DC where they can earn a $100K award. The team was selected for their cutting edge math research, which has the potential to expose security flaws in Internet financial transactions and may provide solutions to major open problems in number theory.

Suwanee Native and Atlanta Hawks Dancer Competing for Miss Georgia USA on November 18th and 19th

Atlanta, GA--  Kaylin Reque, 22, of Suwanee, will compete for Miss Georgia USA on November 18th and 19th at the Woodland Performing Arts Center in Cartersville.  Kaylin, a graduate of North Gwinnett High School will proudly represent her home town in the pageant as Miss Suwanee, USA.

Reque is the daughter of Eric Reque of Powder Springs and Rhonda Moore - Reque of Suwanee.  Kaylin is employed by the NBA (and) NHL as a 3rd year veteran  Atlanta Hawks A-Town Dancer as well as a Blue Crew member of the Atlanta Thrasher’s Hockey Team. Kaylin’s future plans include attending Georgia State University to pursue a business degree in Sports and Entertainment Management.

The winner of Miss Georgia USA will compete in a live broadcast on NBC in the 60th Edition of the Miss USA pageant in the Spring of 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner of Miss USA 2011 will represent the United States at Miss Universe 2011.

Students and Parents Encouraged to Attend College Fair on Tuition Assistance

Atlanta, GA--  Councilman Aaron Watson and School Board member, Yolanda Johnson have teamed up with The Scholarship Academy in an effort to help Atlanta students and parents secure funding for college.  The "I am College Material" Fair will take place on Wednesday 11/17 from 4pm-8pm at the Atrium in Atlanta City Hall.

The Federal Pell Grant and Georgia HOPE are both facing major shortages in the coming years, and the councilman want families to start planning now for their educational futures.

The Scholarship Academy is a local nonprofit scholarship preparatory program that has launched this "I am College Material" Scholarship Fair.  

The event will introduce “average students” to the private scholarship application process.

Gwinnett County will Host the Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m

Atlanta, GA--  Gwinnett County will host the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial in Lawrenceville. The public is invited to attend this observance to pay tribute to the men and women who have served honorably in the military, during wartime or peacetime, and to memorialize the fallen heroes who have sacrificed their lives to protect our nation.

 Gwinnett County commissioners and County Administrator Glenn Stephens will lead this year's ceremony. The keynote speaker will be by Brig. Gen. Jerry J. Bradford. Honor guard units from the Gwinnett County Police, Fire and Emergency Services and Sheriff's Departments and the Lawrenceville Police Department will also take part in the event.

The Veterans Day Ceremony will be televised at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 on TVgwinnett, the county's local government access cable channel.
