Interstate work continues through the weekend

(WXIA) -- Another weekend, another series of road projects -- that seems to be the summertime theme in metro Atlanta.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said the roadwork that has plagued drivers for the past several weekends will continue through Monday morning.

Among the projects:

Cherokee County
* ROLLING CLOSURE: Nightly sweeping on I-575 in both directions

Cobb County
* Two southbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Paces Ferry and South Atlanta roads from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly for slab replacement.

Cobb/Fulton counties
* Two lanes in each direction of I-285 will be closed between I-75 and New Northside Drive from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign construction.

Salude bringing 70 jobs to Suwanee

SUWANEE, Ga. -- Salude, a transitional rehabilitation facility in Suwanee, will open in July, bringing with it 70 new jobs.

The skilled nursing facility will officially begin taking patients on July 10, with a focus on patients who have been discharged from the hospital, but aren't well enough to go home. It will have an estimated economic impact of more than $16 million in Gwinnett County.

The 64-room, 46,610-square-foot facility is on 14.5 acres on Northolt Parkway. It will cater to patients with post-acute, short-term rehab needs, such as those recovering from cardiac, orthopedic and respiratory procedures.

Dr. Alan Wang, CEO of Salude, will also act as full-time physician on staff. There will two nurse practitioners on duty at all times.

Weekend roadwork to affect I-20, I-285 drivers

(WXIA) -- Road projects are scheduled to take place on Interstates 285 and 20 this weekend.

All work is weather permitting, but drivers should still look out for road crews and plan for possible delays.

Among the scheduled projects:

Cobb County
* Intermittent pacing will take place on I-285 at Atlanta Road from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday

Cobb/Fulton counties
* Nightly sign construction will close two lanes in each direction of I-285 between I-75 and New Northside Drive

Douglas County
* Two westbound lanes of I-20 between Bill Arp and Liberty roads will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly

Fulton County
* Three eastbound lanes of I-285 between Riverside Drive and the Glenwood Connector will be closed nightly

Veteran going through hard times gets a new home

SUWANEE, Ga. – Wednesday morning, a Suwanee veteran who's been through hard times since returning home received a wonderful gift.

The pomp, circumstance, and flags represented a party – a party to honor the family of a soldier.

Long before Sgt. Perry Haley knew about the party, he was on CNN with his wife and three daughters describing the migraines and nosebleeds he received overseas.

"In the country they don't have an MRI machine, so they fed me ibuprofen and made me tough through it till I got home," he said.

Firefighters freed a woman who got trapped after a tractor-trailer rolled on top of her vehicle.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – Firefighters freed a woman who got trapped after a tractor-trailer rolled on top of her vehicle.

The incident happened at Lawrenceville Suwanee Road NW at Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee around 3:45 p.m. on Friday. Fire officials say it appeared that the trailer of the truck separated, rolled over the media and crushed the roof of the car in the opposite lane.

The woman was conscious, alert and breathing and was able to crawl partially out of the vehicle, according to the Gwinnett County Fire Department Public Information Officer Tommy Rutledge. She was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

All lanes of Lawrenceville Suwanee Road were closed as crews worked to clear the scene.

Several lanes to close for weekend roadwork

(WXIA) -- Portions of Interstates 20 and 285 will become proverbial parking lots this weekend as crews perform much-needed roadwork.

Some projects may be postponed by predicted thunderstorms, but drivers are still asked to plan ahead and find alternate routes where possible.

The I-20 roadwork that has plagued metro Atlanta for weeks will continue in these areas:

Atlanta
* Two lanes will close in both directions between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Langhorn Street from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday for emergency bridge repairs on Westview Drive
* Three eastbound lanes will be closed between Boulevard and Gresham Road from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, and 8 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday for restriping

Douglas County
Two eastbound lanes will be closed between Bill Arp and Liberty roads from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly for work

Gwinnett County Fire adding body armor

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- In response to the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a local fire and emergency department is adding some major safety equipment.

The Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services is adding body armor and quick response field medical kits to their equipment.

Firefighters want to be first responders and the first ones in the building during dangerous situations, but without the right equipment, it's just not safe.

Gwinnett County of Fire and Emergency Services is investing more than $300,000 to make sure they're employees are prepared and protected to run in to active shooter scenarios.

The money comes from the department's operating budget, and was just approved Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters are already using new and improved field medical kits, which weigh just a pound and a half. Their day-to-day bags weigh more than 40 pounds.
