USA Today's Super 25 Poll for Metro Atlanta is here

ATLANTA (WXIA) -- This season, 11Alive.Com and HighSchoolSports.Net will have a weekly Super 25 high school basketball poll for Metro Atlanta schools.  The poll, which is provided by USA Today, will rank both boys and girls teams from all classifications using the Massey Ratings.

With teams from the Atlanta area being ranked among the nation's best again this season, the Super 25 Poll will be a weekly measuring stick. We hope it will spark a conversation about who holds the title of top basketball team in the Atlanta area. We start with the poll for the week of January 2.

High school sports get a new 'beat'

High school sports get a new 'beat'

ATLANTA -- In just one week, Atlanta-area high school sports will get a new beat.

Beats Battle, the brainchild of atlanta.highschoolsports.net and Patchwerk Recording Studios, will give high school students the chance to use their talents to show pride in their schools and teams.

Each week Patchwerk will provide different beats on atlanta.highschoolsports.net. Students can download the beats, add lyrics that praise their favorite high school teams and upload their products to the Web.

Voters can visit atlanta.highschoolsports.net to select a weekly winner. At the end of the season, one grand prize winner will receive recording time in the legendary Patchwerk Studios.

Carrollton High to host football triple-header

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- The 2011 Florida vs. Georgia Gridiron Challenge will be a football triple-header at Carrollton High School's Grisham Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3.

The first game between Carrollton and Vanguard, Fla. will kick off at noon. The second game will see Westminster face Baker County, Fla.; kickoff will be at 3 p.m. The third and final game will feature North Gwinnett against St. Augustine at 6 p.m.

Event tickets are good for all three games. They are on sale now for $10 and can also be purchased for $12 at the gate.

M.L King faces South Gwinnett on Thursday Night

Decatur, Ga--The Class AAAAA No. 7 ranked Martin Luther King Jr. Lions open their season on Thursday night in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Hallford Stadium against the South Gwinnett Comets (0-1).

South Gwinnett won at home a year ago in a 44-41 shootout featuring a pair of high octane offenses.

 M.L. King's Jonquel Dawson passed for a record setting 486 yards in the season opener a year ago and went on to set the season and career passing marks in DeKalb County and returns to add to that career total this fall. Dawson passed for 3,611 yards last season and moved on top of the career passing list with 5,383 yards.

South Gwinnett lost its season opener 45-13 to current No. 1 ranked

Class AAAAA No. 6 ranked Stephenson (1-0) and Class AAA No. 6 ranked Cedar Grove are both coming off season opening victories as they meet up on Friday in a 7:30 p.m. game at Hallford Stadium.

SUWANEE: Top U.S. teams to play at North Gwinnett

SUWANEE, Ga. -- North Gwinnett High School will host some of the top teams in the country this Saturday, Aug. 27 starting at 5 p.m. at Tom Robinson Memorial Stadium at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee.

The National High School Gridiron Challenge will feature the 2010 nationally ranked and Class 5A region 7 champions North Gwinnett High School playing East St. Louis High School from East St. Louis, IL, the 2008 Illinois State Champions. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.

The first game of the doubleheader will start at 5 p.m. between Grayson High School of Loganville and Edgewater High School from Orlando.
