Race this weekend: Thin Mint Sprint

SUWANEE, Ga. -- The Lanier Girl Scouts will host a 5K fundraiser this weekend.

The Thin Mint Sprint will be Saturday, Aug. 23 at Settles Bridge Park in Suwanee. Race day registration opens at 7:30 a.m., and the run is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. A 1-mile fun run will start at 9:30 a.m.

It costs $30 to sign up for the 5K on race day. The fun run is $20. Finishers who sign up at the last minute will have their T-shirts mailed to them within a month of the event.

A registration form can be downloaded at lanier.scoutlander.com. Those who sign up on paper, as opposed to online, will have $3 extra of their entry fee given directly to the scouts' annual fund.

Settles Bridge Park is located at 380 Johnson Road.

Shake the cobwebs off those magic wands and dust off your glass slippers for Suwanee Performing Arts' 2014 Broadway in the Park production. A cast of 70 young local performers and 30 backstage volunteers will bring Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella as well as an original one-act play, Spellbound – the Musical, to the Town Center stage July 25 and 26.

A classic fairy tale set to music, Cinderella is the story of a young woman forced into a life of servitude by her cruel stepmother and self-centered stepsisters; she dreams of a better life and a chance to attend the prince's ball. With the assistance of her fairy godmother, Cinderella's dreams come true.

Gwinnett County Public Library is proud to announce New York Times bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván, a 17-year veteran and former U.S. Army captain, as the featured author for the 2014 One Book, One Community countywide reading program.
 
Montalván will be joined by his beloved service dog, Tuesday, for events on September 20 and 21.
 
Montalván and Tuesday will kick off the 2014 Suwanee Fest on Saturday, September 20 at 9 am as grand marshals for the Suwanee Fest Parade.
 
At 11:30 am on the Town Center Stage, Montalván will read from his children’s book, “Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond between a Soldier and his Service Dog,” which details a day in the life of this service dog extraordinaire as narrated by Tuesday.

Pike Nurseries to hold terrarium classes

(WXIA) -- Pike Nurseries is offering two classes for customers who want to bring the outdoors into their homes.

On Saturday, July 19, Pike shoppers can attend a free terrarium and fairy garden class, where they will learn how to create and maintain glass gardens.

The class is free and will be held at every Pike Nurseries location at 9 a.m.

A similar class geared toward children will be hosted Wednesday, July 23 at 10 a.m., also at every Pike store. Children will make their own fairy gardens to take home. The class costs $14.99 per child.

Pike to hold butterfly, hummingbird classes

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta residents who are interested in having more butterflies and hummingbirds in their gardens are invited to attend a free workshop at Pike Nurseries.

The Atlanta-based nursery chain will offer two Attracting Butterflies and Hummingbirds to Your Garden classes.

An adult-centered class will be held Saturday, June 7 at 9 a.m. at all Pike locations. A second session designed especially for kids will take place Wednesday, June 11 at 1 p.m. Both events are free.

Attendees will learn planting techniques and the types of flowering plants they should include in their gardens to bring in some new feathered and fluttering friends. Children in the Wednesday class will also make butterfly crafts.

Georgia SPCA announces 5th annual fall gala

On September 6, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., the Georgia SPCA celebrates “An Evening in Paris” at the Gwinnett Center Ballroom, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.

The evening includes a silent auction, with music and dancing courtesy of DJ Mr. Christopher of Audiocake, and catering by Proof of the Pudding, but the climax of the evening might just be the dogs who will walk the catwalk to model designer fashions created by Linda Higgins of Classy Doggie Designs.

Linda shows her couture canine fashions at fashion week events all over the country and is excited to be participating in “An Evening in Paris.” Linda’s fashions have been featured on the front cover of Chihuahua Connection and Pet Style magazines, in the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and can be found in boutiques all over the world. Linda’s design won the Best Dressed in Show award at the 2013 New York Pet Fashion Show.

Arts in the Park returns this weekend

SUWANEE, Ga. -- This year's Arts in the Park festival will have a retro hippie theme.

The popular Suwanee arts festival will take place Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Town Center Park.

More than 75 artists are scheduled to attend the event, displaying their jewelry, pantings, pottery, photography and more. Look-alikes from 1970's pop culture and happy music of the era will also fill the park.

The festival will host a sidewalk chalk competition for kids and adults. There is a $10 entry fee to participate.
