Suwanee authorities warn of phone scam

SUWANEE, Ga. -- The Help Desk and Suwanee Police Department are warning residents of a phone scam.

Residents are receiving phone calls and voicemails from a man who identifies himself as a Suwanee police officer.

According to Captain Cass Mooney of the Suwanee Police Department, it has been reported by residents that when the suspect calls them, it appears on their caller ID as what looks like a Suwanee Police Department number but when he leaves a voice mail he leaves a number with a 202 area code.

The suspect tells the resident that they have a "federal complaint" against them and threatens to send the police to their home and place of business to arrest them if they do not pay a fine over the phone.

"This is a scam." stated Mooney, "The Suwanee Police Department does not contact a resident seeking payment."

If you have any questions regarding this scam you can call the Suwanee Police Department at 770-945-8995.
