Delta Community Credit Union sponsors financial literacy program

(WXIA) -- For the second year in a row, Delta Community Credit Union will sponsor the brass | Media Student Program, which brings financial literacy skills to classrooms across metro Atlanta.

Teachers can register for the program at studentprogram.com. Atlanta-based Delta Community's partnership with the Student Program has helped it reach more than 200,000 students in 159 schools.

One local educator -- Michael Young, a Career & Technical Education teacher at Collins Hill High School in Gwinnett County -- was the 3,000th teacher nationwide to sign up for the program. He said it has strengthened his students' understanding of money and possible career paths, and has helped them prepare for college.

SUWANEE, Ga. -- The Lanier Girl Scouts will host a 5K fundraiser this weekend.

The Thin Mint Sprint will be Saturday, Aug. 23 at Settles Bridge Park in Suwanee. Race day registration opens at 7:30 a.m., and the run is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. A 1-mile fun run will start at 9:30 a.m.

It costs $30 to sign up for the 5K on race day. The fun run is $20. Finishers who sign up at the last minute will have their T-shirts mailed to them within a month of the event.

A registration form can be downloaded at lanier.scoutlander.com. Those who sign up on paper, as opposed to online, will have $3 extra of their entry fee given directly to the scouts' annual fund.

Settles Bridge Park is located at 380 Johnson Road.

GDOT: Avoid I-285 this weekend

GDOT: Avoid I-285 this weekend

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation has a strong word of warning for Atlanta-area drivers this weekend: avoid the Perimeter.

Crews will work on several I-285 projects, causing lane closures and heavy delays. Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes where possible.

Some of the scheduled Perimeter work includes:

* 2 northbound right lanes will be closed between South Atlanta and Paces Ferry roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete slab replacement and interchange construction

* 2 southbound outside lanes will be closed between Washington Road and Old National Highway from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday for bridge joint repairs

* 3 southbound left lanes near Flat Shoals Road will be closed Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for paving

Work will continue in other parts of metro Atlanta as well.

Phone scam reported in Gwinnett County

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- At least three Gwinnett County women have fallen victim to a recent phone scam, and now police are hoping to pass along information that could help prevent future cases.

Four people have come forward, saying they received calls from someone claiming to be Lt. Pierson with the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Warrants Division.

The suspect told the victims they had outstanding warrants for failure to appear for a jury summons. They were asked to use pre-paid debit cards to pay the associated fines and avoid arrest. All four victims told police the caller sounded professional and was very convincing.

Three victims purchased Green Dot MoneyPak cards over the phone in the amounts of $525, $810 and $962. The fourth victim did not make a purchase.

Major roadwork resumes this weekend

(WXIA) -- Last weekend, drivers got a bit of a reprieve when several major road projects were postponed. But all that work will resume this weekend.

Some of the problem areas include Interstate 20 in Rockdale and Newton counties, and I-285 in Cobb County.

As always, all roadwork is weather permitting. Rain could halt or postpone projects.

Weekend drivers should use caution and look for crews in these areas:

Bartow County
* One right southbound lane of I-75 will be closed four miles before Cass White Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete slab removal and bridge raising.
* One left northbound lane of I-75 will be closed four miles after Cass White Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete slab removal and bridge raising.

Gwinnett kindergartener bussed to wrong location


SUWANEE, Ga. -- Bryson Ford's first day of kindergarten at Roberts Elementary School in Suwanee didn't end the way he or his mom had hoped.

"I got on Bus Number 3 and they took me home and I got lost," said the 5-year-old. "I was sad," he added.

(WXIA) -- Thousands of Georgia students return to the classroom this week, and many of them meet the requirements for free and reduced-price meals during the school day.

"It is important to provide our students with healthy, nutritious meals to help improve their chances of success and increase their learning opportunities," Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Director Nancy Rice said in a statement. "Research indicates that eating habits affect learning. We want to ensure all our children are well nourished and ready to learn."

Families that qualify for free and reduced-price lunch will get applications from their children's schools.
